On the women's side, Spain and Barcelona midfielder Aitama Bonmati won the player of the year award. Spain won the FIFA Women's World Cup under the captaincy of 25-year-old Bonmati. She won this award for the first time.
The Ballon d'Or award is given to the best player of the year based on the votes of 100 journalists around the world.
Messi led Argentina to win the World Cup for the first time since 1986. He also helped the American club Inter Miami to win the first trophy in the form of the Leagues Cup.

Messi has won 3 more Ballon d'Or awards than the closest Cristiano Ronaldo. Ronaldo last won this award in 2017. For the first time since 2003, Al Nasser's forward Ronaldo was not nominated for the award.
Norwegian forward Haaland scored a record 36 goals in 35 games in the Premier League last season and won the treble title of Champions League and FA Cup with City.
For his achievement, Holland was awarded the Gerd Muller Trophy. He scored 52 goals in all competitions last season. After receiving the award, Haaland thanked the City Club and his family.
England and Real Madrid midfielder Jude Bellingham won the best young player award.
