Zelensky is facing American pressure for the election
So far, Zelensky has not rejected the election. He says that security, law and assistance are all challenges for the election. However, he said that he is ready to stand for a second term if the election is held during the war.
How to conduct elections during war? For the past few months, a heated debate has been going on in Ukraine about the presidential election on the date that was fixed the previous year.
With the Russian invasion of Ukraine, martial law is in force there. According to that law, all elections are banned. Many Ukrainians are worried that the election may distract them from the country's fight for survival.
President Volodymyr Zelensky's words have given relief to such thinkers. In the first week of November, he said, "In the current situation, elections are not appropriate."
By postponing the election, there is also a situation of political confrontation. This encounter is happening not because of Ukraine but because of America. How is the conflict in Ukraine due to America?
The United States, which is participating in the presidential election in 2024, is the one that caused the election debate in Ukraine. A small group within the Republican Party is debating this.
Olah Avizoyska, president of the election monitoring network Opora, says, "The radical right-wing Republicans are debating the election to justify their demand to stop military aid to Ukraine."
As Donald Trump's separatist views continue to influence Republicans, the issue of Ukraine aid in American domestic politics is falling into political differences.
Avyzoyska says, "Many Republicans support Ukraine, but they will definitely make the issue of elections in Ukraine an issue."
They have started it. Vivek Ramaswamy, who is preparing to run for the presidency from the Republic last month, has said, "Ukraine is not a symbol of democracy and he is threatening not to hold elections until the United States gives more aid."
Republican MP Lindsey Graham also said during his visit to Kiev in August that Ukraine must hold elections in 2024. Ukrainian President Zelensky has understood the meaning of the voice that is being raised in America. He is aware that it will be difficult to compete with Russia if his main ally stops the aid. In a television interview last August, he said, "There are some reasons why the United States could stop aid to Ukraine." Elections in Ukraine are one of them. I am aware of the voices of the Republicans in America demanding elections in Ukraine.
So far, Zelensky has not rejected the election. He says that security, law and assistance are all challenges for the election. However, he said that he is ready to stand for a second term if the election is held during the war. In a recent interview, he said, "I am ready to hold elections within a year or at any time during that period."
A domestic challenge
There are many other challenges in removing the obstacles of martial law for elections. Among the two main ones, the first is security and the second is the displaced population. The president of the ruling People's Party, Olena Sulyek, says, "Elections are impossible at a time when millions have been displaced due to the civil war." We are not even in a position to guarantee the safety of citizens.
Millions of Ukrainians have taken refuge in neighboring countries due to the war, and school buildings used as polling stations have also been destroyed. Similarly, there is no position to update the voter list and the budget for elections is also insufficient.
